Halflings tend to have few permanent settlements, and most live as traders, with kind of a gypsy vibe. They’re known (somewhat unfairly) for being able to find secret ways into and out of most cities, and fence or find most things you’d like.
The halflings live mostly in caravans or riverboats that crisscross the human kingdoms, and provide much of the trade between the human lands. They are sometimes called upon to negotiate treaties and trade disputes due to their widespread travelling and exposure to many cultures. It’s not that they’re trusted, exactly, but everyone believes that a deal negotiated by a halfling means they’re taking a cut from everyone equally, and so it’s at least nominally fair.
